National Indigenous Peoples Day is a National celebration<\/strong> of the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis throughout Canada. Huronia Historical Parks is proud to be a part of highlighting these achievements through our educational focused celebration each year. The Government of Canada chose June 21, the summer solstice, as National Indigenous Peoples Day.<\/p>\n

For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year. It has been a nationally recognized day since 1996.<\/p>\n

This event will encompass<\/strong> a wide variety of unique Indigenous cultural and historical demonstrations such as music, art and traditional teachings, curated through pre-recorded videos, hosted by Huronia Historical Parks and recorded by various\u00a0Indigenous presenters.<\/p>\n

Examples of current programming include:<\/strong>
\n\u25cf Indigenous drum making
\n\u25cf Historic Lacrosse stick making, and teachings of the Lacrosse game
\n\u25cf Drumming and dancing demonstrations
\n\u25cf Birch bark demonstrations \u2013 canoe and basket making
\n\u25cf Indigenous artist workshops
\n\u25cf Indigenous museum curator sessions
\n\u25cf Indigenous culinary demonstrations<\/p>\n

\nWe invite educators, their classes and members of the public to join us online for this educational & engaging experience.
